A few months after its unveiling on May 3, 2007, the Million Dollar Coin—often referred to as “The Big Maple Leaf”—was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest gold coin. Conceived initially as a singular statement, a small number five in total—were later produced on a made-to-order basis for private collectors.

A tribute to the Million Dollar Coin issued in 2007, the reverse design re-creates its elegant arrangement of three silver maple (Acer saccharinum) leaves created by Stan Witten, former Senior Engraver and now retired, surrounding it with a 12-sided border inspired by the shape of the record-setting showpiece dubbed “The Big Maple Leaf.” A textured pattern of overlapping maple leaves—a new design element conceived expressly for this anniversary piece—forms an outer frame on the reverse and fills the field on the obverse, which features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
