Charles Dickens was one of Victorian England's greatest writers. Forced to leave school at the age of 12 to work in a factory to support his family, he was an internationally acclaimed author by the time he was 24. He was celebrated for his wit and keen social observations, and campaigned actively to affect a change in conditions for the working class.

The obverse of this coin is split in half. The left side has the Ian Rank-Broadly effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, while the right side features a portrait of Charles Dickens set within a frame.
