The red dragon of Wales has been used since 655 AD, when some ancient Celtic leaders were viewed as the personification of dragons. Throughout history, it has been used to represent Celts in battles against invading Saxons, as well as by Britons against the Romans. It is believed that what is now the Welsh Red Dragon was the battle standard used by King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders as a way to strike fear into their opponents. The Tudor Monarchs of Welsh origin used the red dragon to support the English Crown's coat of arms.
