The Kookaburra is the pride of Australia, being displayed on postage stamps, as the name of the National Men's national hockey team, and as famed metal Worker, Stuart Devlin's dynamic and ever-evolving Kookaburra series of the Perth Mint. As a native to Australia and New Guinea, they are characterized by their large heads, stout bodies, prominent eyes, and a large bill. In nature, they are distinguished by their easily recognizable call, which mimics human laughter. Minted since 1990, the top-rated Kookaburra series contains 9999 fine silver and has featured the lovable avian in various poses since then. 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of this highly sought after coin, and the Perth Mint has limited the mintage to only 500,000 coins!
The reverse displays Stuart Devlin's Kookaburra, Perched upon a ledge as it begins its morning call. A sunrise is depicted in the background, with skillful and expert engraving used to illustrate the Kookaburra in incredibly vivid detail, and the design is enhanced by a spectacular proof finish, which is accentuated by the matte finish of the background. The image is encapsulated by a ring, which signifies the title of the series and has the added security feature of micro-engraved lines, which are only visible under a microscope, in addition to the Perth Mark "P." "30th Anniversary" is seen below, along with the denomination and metal purity.
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint's 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
