As the second animal to cross the finish line of the Jade Emperor’s fabled story of the Chinese Zodiac, oxen are revered in Chinese culture for their industrious nature, allowing them to work diligently until the job is done, only to move on to the next task. Reliability, responsibility, excellent work ethic, and a goal-oriented nature are all attributes related to those born in Ox years. The 2021 edition is the third iteration of the immensely popular Lunar series of the Perth Mint, which is now in its third generation!

Contained on the reverse side is an ox in a passant posture, with its right hoof raised as it surveys its surroundings in a bamboo forest. The coins field remains blank, with the exception of the Chinese character for the powerful bovine and the year of issue. The obverse contains Jody Clark’s illustration of Queen Elizabeth II with a high degree of attention to detail. The effigy is encapsulated by her majesties title, the nation of origin, the weight and purity, and face value.

ABOUT THE PERTH MINT

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint's 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970.
