The original Flying Eagle is a one-cent circulating coin initially released by the United States Mint in 1856. The eagle was designed by James B. Longacre. During the early 1850s, the coin that was known as the "large cent" (which was about the size of a half-dollar) became a nuisance due to its large size which caused issues with commerce and mintage. The United States mint created the Flying Eagle cent as a way to contour the situation, the coin was originally minted in 88% copper and 12% nickel.
