Fall leaf colour varies from year to year, and some autumns can be less colourful than others. It depends on a variety of factors, including soil condition and plant stress; drought, heavy rains, or a hard freeze are also associated with muted colour development, while sunny days with cool (but not freezing) nights are ideal for vivid reds, yellows and golds.

On all five coins, the reverse design by Canadian artist Nathalie Lagacé features a pair of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) leaves in early fall, their lobes gently overlapping in the centre, and their stems crossing below. The leaves’ late summer/early fall colours are brought to life on the 1 oz. coin through the use of Vivid Toning Effect, an innovative colour technology introduced in 2026. Each obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
